Herbal Medicine

Chinese Herbology is traditionally one of the most important modalities utilized in TCM.  Over the course of millenia, herbs have been used, experimented with and refined into a complete system of medicine that treats all types of disease.  Chinese herbs comprise a powerful tool to aid the body in eradicating disease and facilitating its recovery from disease.

With thousands herbs in the Chinese Pharmacopia, Frank uses about 300 of the most important and effective herbs in his practice. Choosing which of these herbs to put into a prescription, or formula, is both art and science.  The patient must be viewed as a whole and not just a list of symptoms.   The root condition of the patient has to be seen, to be felt by the doctor in order for the treatment to be a success.

When a patient comes into the clinic, Frank carefully chooses 8-12 herbs to combine into a formula for the patient.   The herbs are chosen based on characteristics, on organs and areas affected and based on affect.  Some herbs will be chosen to treat the root cause of the condition and some may be included to assuage the symptoms.  In addition, Frank incorporates herbs based on modern research that has shown they have certain affects (such as lowering blood pressure).

The most important thing to remember in herbal medicine is that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.  A well-made formula acts synergistically as a well-balanced entity to create health and balance in the patient.  An unbalanced formula has no hope of true healing.
